Spare No Effort:
2015 Is Now

“It is false pride to boast to the world about the importance of one’s work, but it is false humility, and finally just as destructive, not to recognize – and recognize with gratitude – that one’s work has a sense.  Let us avoid the second fallacy as carefully as the first, and let us work in the conviction that our work has a meaning beyond the narrow and individual one and has meant something for humankind.”

– Dag Hammarskjöld

Member States are engaged in intense consultations with each other and with representatives of the private sector and civil society in preparation for the 2005 World Summit.  NGOs have expressed great concern that the pledges made at the Millennium Summit five years ago have not been met.  The upcoming Summit must mobilize the political will necessary to significantly strengthen multilateral cooperation and partnerships to implement the Millennium Development Goals.  While agreeing with many of the recommendations to be adopted at the Summit, there is also concern in the NGO community that civil society’s views are not being sufficiently taken into account and many issues are not being addressed.

This final roundtable will provide a platform for representatives of civil society organizations and the private sector to engage informally with Member States.  Participants will have an opportunity to voice their concerns and make recommendations on the United Nations strategy to strengthen the Organization in its 60th year. Expert respondents from around the world will offer their perspectives on important NGO efforts as reflected in the We Will Spare No Effort report prepared by the Millennium+5 NGO Network (a working group of NGOs collaborating with the United Nations through the Department of Public Information and the Economic and Social Council), the summary of the General Assembly’s Informal Hearings with Civil Society in June, and the Conference roundtable sessions held earlier in the day.  This session seeks to identify talking points that will encourage a more dynamic dialogue on the work of the Organization that must be sustained in the months and years ahead.
