Activities of the Networking Committee

The Networking Committee is responding to numerous requests from participants in past DPI Conferences for opportunities to engage with other attendees outside the formal meetings of the Conference.

A variety of networking venues have been created to compliment the program of the Conference itself.

The context in which the Networking Committee has approached this 2005 Conference is to recall the Millennium Vision from the 2000 Millennium Summit:

The context in which the Networking Committee has approached this 2005 Conference is to recall the Millennium Vision from the 2000 Millennium Summit:

Our vision is of a world that is human-centered and genuinely democratic, where all human beings are full participants and determine their own destinies.  In our vision we are one human family, in all our diversity, living on one common homeland and sharing a just, sustainable and peaceful world, guided by universal principles of democracy, equality, inclusion, voluntarism, non-discrimination and participation by all persons, men and women, young and old, regardless of race, faith, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity or nationality.  It is a world where peace and human security, as envisioned in the principles of the United Nations Charter, replace armaments, violent conflict and wars.  It is a world where everyone lives in a clean environment with a fair distribution of the earth’s resources.  Our vision includes a special role for the dynamism of young people and the experience of the elderly and reaffirms the universality, indivisibility and interdependence of all human rights – civil, political, economic, social and cultural. 1

Breakfast Networking
On each day of the Conference participants are invited to join in informal, facilitated discussions from 8:15-9:45.  These meetings will be held in the Refreshment Tent adjacent to the main UN entrance.  Breakfast will be available for purchase.
Wednesday, September 7

There will be groups to discuss each of the eight Millennium Development Goals.  Participants are requested to bring their examples of “best practices” in achieving the MDGs. One focus will be to identify additional targets and indicators to measure progress in the achievement of each MDG.
  Thursday, September 8

Discussions will be divided into the four clusters identified in the Secretary General’s report “In Larger Freedom”.
  Friday, September 9

One or more groups will discuss creating partnerships to achieve the Millennium Vision.

Thematic Lunchtime Networking
Opportunities for participants to network around areas of special interest will be provided from 12-1:30 in the Refreshment Tent.  When you arrive at the Conference you can receive a colored dot which will be worn on your identification badge.  This will indicate your particular primary area of interest and allow you to have instant recognition of others with the same major interest.  Each day there will be facilitators in the Refreshment Tent for each area of interest.  These individuals will aid in the exchange of ideas, information and contacts.  You may participate in any group.

Informal Networking Room
A room has been set aside during the entire Conference as a “Conversation Place”, a quiet place to talk.  A skilled facilitator will be present to assist as participants dialogue with each other, share experiences, develop collaborating relationships and create your own networks in this relaxed setting. W, Th, F, 10AM-1 and 3-6 in Conference Room A.

Town Hall Wall

On the Town Hall Wall each day we will post different questions to solicit the opinions of Conference participants on issues of concern to all of us.  Please take time to express your ideas.

One-Time Special Events

These opportunities have been developed in response to the most frequently asked questions of Conference participants, “Where do we go to look for funding for our organization?” and “How do we work most effectively with the United Nations?”

Networking Panel

This Panel will address challenges faced by NGOs in obtaining funds and offer recommendations to overcome these challenges. The Panel will include representation from three to four major foundations. This panel will be held on Thursday afternoon, September 8 from 3-5.

Advocacy Panel

This panel will feature experts from the DPI, the NGO Section, UN offices and non-governmental networks.  Wednesday, September 7 from 3-5.

Visit to the Foundation Center

This event will take place Tuesday, September 6 from 4-6 PM. Registration is limited to 75 persons with priority given to overseas and out-of-town participants.
